Our body is capable of protecting us from infection but do you know how? There are specific and non specific defenses that protect our body. Below these are explained:
Specific Defenses
Immune Response: this includes B cells and T cells. The B cells job is to provide immunity against antigens and pathogens in the bodily fluids. This process is called humoral immunity. T cells defend against abnormal cells and pathogens in living cells. This is called Cell mediated immunity.
Antibodies: Their job is to recognize the antigens and bind to them. They are carried in the blood stream to attack pathogens.
Non Specific Defenses
Skin: This is the most significant part of our bodies defense because it is our first protection against infections. With the dead skin cells on our skins surface it makes it difficult for the pathogens to penetrate. However if there is a break in the skin this is not good. The pathogens can enter your body and multiply causing an infection.
Inflammatory Response: This is a reaction to tissue damage caused by an injury. Once pathogens have been detected millions of white blood cells are produced and sent to destroy the bacteria or virus.
Interferons: Interfere with the growth of the virus. They block viral replication and inhibit the synthesis of viral proteins causing the progress of the infection to slow down.
Phagocytosis: White blood cells will eat virus particles by destroying and engulfing it with enzymes in their lysosomes.
